Direct Reduced Iron (DRI), also known as sponge iron, is produced through the direct reduction of iron ore (in the form of agglomerates, pellets, or fines) into metallic iron using a reducing gas or elemental carbon derived from natural gas or coal. Many types of iron ores are suitable for direct reduction.
Direct reduction refers to solid-state processes that convert iron oxides into metallic iron at temperatures below the melting point of iron. The resulting reduced iron gets its name from these processes. One example involves heating iron ore in a furnace at 800–1200°C (1470–2190°F) in the presence of a reducing syngas, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide.
After reduction, the metal becomes porous and sponge-like in structure.
